Homebrew Website Club

Kevin Marks:

the difficulty with livetweeting is when you are speaking too

Svgshare.com is my site for sharing vector images - for example http://svgshare.com/s/Vw is a nice one

Stacey DePolo:

google's chrome is no longer showing flash this week - does SVG help with that?

Sebastian @SF:

I posted a tweet comparing the GOP to Star Wars https://twitter.com/gundamman/status/817140206868410368 and it got 5 million views

Stacey DePolo:

I saw a lot of things comparing Trump to Star Wars - was that all you?

Sebastian @SF:

there were a lot of people comparing the plot of star wars films - I get a lot of "life reflecting art" replies

Kevin Marks:

oops, I mis-stated - it was Dr Evil from Austin Powers not star wars

#ThatTechGirl:

I don't have a homebrew site, but I did a 4 hour hackathon on a new website last night

I built a birthday website for a friend of mine, and he hasn't seen it yet - it's at http://granisoncrawford.com/

it's a wordpress site - today is his birthday, and he has no idea it is up yet

Kevin Marks:

this is a new level of indieweb evangelism - making websites for people who don't know you're doing it

#ThatTechGirl:

I'm going to call my friend and tell him to look at http://granisoncrawford.com/

Granison is an actor/entertainer with a vertical farming startup, so I wanted to make him a web presence

How are you? Granison: "I'm Incredible" LM: I want to tell you happy birthday

I want you to go to http://granisoncrawford.com/ in the browser on your phone

Granison Crawford:

Whoa! Did you make http://granisoncrawford.com/ for me? This is freakin' awesome! You what?

#ThatTechGirl:

I'm at the Homebrew indieweb meetup and I think that you're amazing and I want the world to see it too

Granison Crawford:

Thank you! - this is so cool, Liberty, you are so awesome.

#ThatTechGirl:

everyone should have a website - this is up and running for you- you're now granisoncrawford.com

That is how you do a birthday in Silicon Valley

Stacey DePolo:

after the last HWC I made an indieweb wiki page about GoDaddy https://indieweb.org/GoDaddy

"to radically shift the global economy toward life-fulfilling independent ventures" is the indieweb part of this

our enemy is people who want to control the web and siphon the web off into silos and keep the profits

we want each individual member of our communities to start their own business about their purpose in life

and the web is how we see making that happen - finding your niche within the business ecosystem

How can we vote with our dollars for the world that we want, by building to empower ourselves?

The vote of your time and money is the one that no-one can take away from you, whoever is in power

and GoDaddy is now about getting you online for your life-fulfilling venture

#ThatTechGirl:

the best way to take action is to vote with your dollars for what you want, and not funding the others

Stacey DePolo:

whatever it is that you want to say, you can put it on your own site and share it out to social media

get your domain, build your message, share it out to social media and bring it back to your own site

#ThatTechGirl:

get your own domain, get your own website, and bring it back to your domain, where you control it.

Stacey DePolo:

let them find you on the other place, be the octopus with your tentacles on social sites, and your mouth on your domain

get people to sign up for the email list that you send out from your own domain

It's so easy to set up a facebook page, and more work to set up a webpage. We need to make it easy to have both

I used to work with musicians, and they would make MySpace pages, which may now have gone

If they printed their own domain on the CDs, they are in control of where it is at the moment

You get to decide what is real and what is fake - if it's on a silo, they can wipe you out in one go

GoDaddy's default Wordpress theme is on github at https://github.com/godaddy/wp-primer-theme and we want to indiwebify it

Kevin Marks:

We need a #hasAaronpkLandedYet hashtag http://indieweb.org/irc/1970-01-17/line/1484193706

Stacey DePolo:

if you can authenticate with your own domain, that is ownership - twitter won't always do that

Kevin Marks:

one example of how to do verification is using rel="me" links between sites. see http://www.kevinmarks.com/distributed-verify.html

the XFN standard from 2003 lets you connect sites together by linking with rel="me"
